Broward Health Department Opens Seven Locations For H1N1 Vaccines

The Broward County Health Department has opened seven locations for the general public to get H1N1 vaccines.

The City of Coral Springs has a site at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. The vaccines will be available at that location Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. Walk-ins and appointments are available at this location. Walk-ins are welcome on Monday, November 30 from 8 a.m. to noon; Tuesday, December 1 from 4 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday, December 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A nearby location is the Coconut Creek Community Center.

The Health Department is urging people at high risk of contracting the virus to get their vaccines. Those high priority groups include: pregnant women, health care and emergency personnel, people who live with or care for infants younger than six months, anyone 6 months to 24 years, or anyone 25 to 64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza complications.

“It is open to the public, but our focus is on the people in those high priority groups,” said Candy Sims, spokesperson for the Broward County Health Department.

The Health Department has given H1N1 vaccines to over 80,000 students so far and is still offering vaccines at Broward schools, according to Sims.

According to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 14 million and 34 million cases of 2009 H1N1 occurred between April and Oct. 17. CDC also estimates that between 63,000 and 153,000 2009 H1N1-related hospitalizations occurred between April and Oct. 17. In addition, CDC estimates that between 2,500 and 6,000 2009 H1N1-related deaths occurred between April and Oct. 17.
